Camera and Lighting ideas

Camera:

For the beginning of our trailer we have decided to use an establishing shot to introduce main location within the film. Most supernatural horror films starts with this film to help set the scene for their narrative. Medium long shots will also be used to introduce the main characters as they enter their new home. A number of zoom-ins will emphasise their facial expressions and the feelings they have towards this new chapter in their life. The first section of the trailer will welcome the audience into the eerie setting of the film.

During our trailer we intend to include over the shoulder shots along with tracking shots to create the impression the protagonist is being watched/followed by someone, therefore forcing the audience to the edge of their seats. The audience will get the impression that someone is watching the characters every move; meaning that they are in danger. As a result of this the audience will sympathise with the character and this will gradually increase their heart rate.

In one scene of our trailer we have planned for Elizabeth (the older sister) to be cleaning the mirror and then suddenly she sees a ghostly figure looking back at her. To create this shot we will have to try very hard to ensure that the ‘camera man’ is not seen the mirror. This shot will give our trailer an interesting touch. Lastly two shots will be used when characters are interacting with eachother, reflecting the type of relationship they share.

Lighting:
Our trailer is a supernatural horror therefore meaning that many of our scenes will need to be shot at night, however we only have control of the lighting to a certain point, especially when filming outside; this could prove a challenge/obstacle to us.

During our trailer there is a scene when Alice enters the loft. Ambient lighting will only be available coming from the landing below as she opens the ‘door’ to enter. As Alice enters the loft the light will be off; representing that she is entering a dark and dangerous place. Moreover, in the scene where the where Elizabeth sees a ghostly figure/spirit in the mirror, ambient lighting will be used however the figure will be covered in shadows with the use of soft lighting so that she appears lightly rather than being overpowering. This use of lighting is repeated when Emily sees the ghostly figure outside of the window as they are leaving the house at the end of the trailer.

Lastly, we my partner and I are filming outside we will rely on natural lighting to shape of shots and will avoid using night vision as this may give out footage a very superficial blurry appearance. We will work with the light that we have however, if a shot needs to appear darker we can do that during our post-production.
